What is your beard grooming routine for your beard?
“I wash it every other day, pick it out and then use beard balm for shine and style.”
What has been a conversation starter with the beard?

“Usually people ask how long I’ve been growing it etc.”

Ever plan on cutting it or beard forever?
“I don’t think I can ever cut it. I’ve had people through work ask me to cut it for a more professional look but I never folded.”

What is the best thing about having a beard?
“I think the best thing is just being different. I feel people with beards are a special breed of humans.”
Any embarrassing moments? Food caught in beard? Etc

Introducing “Beard Chronicles” with Antoine Smart

I decided to start the Beard Chronicles series in 2013 after growing my beard and noticing more and more guys were growing beards as well.  Through my love for photography I have been able to give bearded men a platform to share their beard journey story. This series has allowed me to meet and make friends from DC all the way to LA. Learning about different guys beard journeys I have developed an interest in grooming and wellness tips for Black men.  Also, from photographing and interviewing for Beard Chronicles I have been able to tap into another creative area: writing.  I have written four blogs in the past year topics including: beards in business to mental health wellness in the Black community.

Full Beard Chronicles interviews can be found on my Instagram: @mrr360

Can’t Knock The Hussle: How Nipsey’s New Beard is New Business

On February 16th, 2018, Los Angeles luminary Nipsey Hussle released his long awaited debut album, Victory Lap. Though Nipsey has long been a prominent figure in the west coast hip-hop scene, he’s still very much a new face to casual listeners. For the uninitiated there are a few things that stick out when watching the video for Nipsey’s lead single, “Rap N*ggas”. His charisma hops off the screen and his hometown of South Central Los Angeles is ever present. There is however one new addition to Nipsey’s visual profile: his beard.

During Nipsey’s musical career he’s generally maintained a consistent look. You can usually find him laced in Crenshaw apparel to represent his home turf along with his trademark braids tucked into a fitted hat. His Eritrean roots have made his free flowing hair a trademark of his, and the beard is now a part of that image.

As a noted hustler with a constant business plan in motion it’s easy to dismiss Nipsey’s new found facial hair as a sign of his busy schedule. Nipsey, however, is a master marketer who makes every move a calculated one. The beard is simply a part of that process. Nipsey’s beard is full, immaculately groomed and consistently looks healthy. It’s clear he puts time and effort into his beard, which makes him look a bit wiser and adds even more authority behind his words. His beard is now a trademark look of his and new fans likely can’t imagine him without it.

If you’re a hustler who cares about his grooming just as much as his paper Nipsey is an excellent act to follow. The first step to bearded greatness is creating a consistent routine. This includes scheduled barbershop appointments as well as an understanding of the look you want to achieve. Not sure if your beard grows in full? Give it at least 2 months and see how it looks. Beards typically look patchy during the initial few weeks, something even Nipsey has been victim too.

Once you give your beard time to fill in you’ll find it can become dry at times, which is where beard oil comes into play. Nobody likes dry, brittle hair (especially not your significant other). Beard oil solves this issue by moisturizing the skin underneath your beard while also adding shine to the hair itself. There are many different beard oils on the market with the difference usually coming in their scent. Much like choosing a cologne you’ll have to find the scent that works for you, though many companies also offer unscented options if you want to keep it simple.

Now that you’ve got your beard tight like Nipsey’s, hop in the whip and let Victory Lap be the soundtrack to your success. From one hustler to another. Visit brands like Babe of Brooklyn for a trusted, premium line of  facial hair products that’ll leave your growth experience refreshing & easy.

Workout Reminders For A Healthy Beard

For guys, working out is a time to restore focus and order into our lives. We pump iron with the intent to rebuild our body image. But that same self care effort dedicated to our bodies is required of us with facial hair, in particular bearded men; but many clients seem to forget this. Exercise is a great way to tackle issues like oily skin by flushing out toxins; but let’s make sure we set ourselves up for the complete win.

Your beard and the skin around it is a sensitive area. If proper care isn’t given, it can lead to ingrown hairs, breakage, and facial odor. Below we’ve listed some helpful tips for a quick routine that will ensure your beard survives your next sweat outbreak.

Step 1: Pre-Workout Rinse

Like a splash of water on the face in the morning, the beard could use the same wake up just before your workout. Warm water hydrates the hair and opens up the pores and is a defense wall for incoming sweat resulting from the impending workout. The additional, warm moisture from the water also helps the hair strand maintain its natural direction and healthy growth from its follicles.

Step 2: Comb Out

By the end of a workout, the hair strands have been exposed to various temperatures that can allow it to curl up, break, or become susceptible to split ends. After a rinse, a quick comb out of the beard hairs is necessary to expand and fall in its natural direction. Be sure to comb in the given direction of the hair strands. I’ve also found that separating the thick hair strands out before a workout controls sweat direction (allowing sweat to fall downward onto the ground). The more you comb out the hair the easier it’ll be for the beard wash to reach the root during your post workout shower and wash.

Step 3: Beard Wash

After a full hour of dumbbell lifts and ab work, your beard is packed with brittleness, possible closed pores, and irritated sweat glands. To combat that and restore your beard back to its natural pH, beard wash is critical. Unlike hair shampoo, beard wash is packed with fewer surfactants (surfactants are a gateway to skin and beard irritation). Refrain from using shampoos on your beard because the chemical properties can be too harsh and ultimately harmful for sensitive areas like facial hair. Beard washes from companies like Scotch Porter are packed with the proper nutrients and are chemically balanced to fight against sweat and the additional dirt and grime you pick up while pumping iron.

Step 4: Restore moisture with Beard Conditioner

Once the wash has done its cleansing job, chances are the natural oils on the hair strands have been removed. Conditioning your beard will restore full moisture back into your hair follicles leading to healthy growth. It will also serve as a defense leading into your next workout and the heat and sweat you’ll experience. The conditioner should be applied directly onto the hair strands to effectively do its job.

Master Barber Tip: To maintain healthy and steady growth that can withstand your next workout, equip yourself with some cordless trimmers and restore the shape to your beard by giving yourself a quick trim. After one last rinse (using cool water), you’ll be ready for the rest of your day.

Rapper Stalley Drops Gems On Facial Hair Growth + New Track

Previously written by Nate Ericksen on GQ.com

No Shave November ended, but your scruff stuck around. Maybe your girl liked it, maybe it added some swagger to your step, or possibly you were just too damn lazy to pick up a razor. One way or another, that baby face of yours has some newfound growth that you’re just not sure how to maintain. You’re in luck. Ohio rapper Stalley happen to be the proud owner of one of the best beards in hip-hop. We hit up the Maybach Music / Blue Collar Gang rapper (and pick designer) to drop some knowledge on what you need to make a long-term commitment to facial hair.

GQ: So when was the last time you were facial hair free?

Stalley: In 2008.

GQ: What’s been the hardest part of maintaining your beard?

Stalley: Sleeping on it.

GQ: How often do you groom?

Stalley: Three times a week I’ll wash and condition it with Organix Shampoo and Conditioner.

GQ: Besides washing, what do you do to keep your facial hair looking fresh?

Stalley: I have a great barber named Sherman in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. He uses Andis clippers and a straight razor. He’s been cutting my hair for about 13 years now.

GQ: Any other products you use? Oils, etc.?

Stalley: No other products but pure confidence and a handsome face.

GQ: Lastly, what advice do you have for someone who’s looking to make a long-term beard-growth commitment?

Stalley: It’s pretty simple advice – just patience and let it grow.

Fast forward into 2017, the Blue Collar Gang CEO gives us a audio glimpse of his forthcoming album, New Wave, with the newest single below. You’ll want to make sure you’re pressing the gas with the windows down on this one.

Hands Dirty, Nose Clean: Grooming Tips We Learned From Hit Show “Power”

It seems like only yesterday we saw Omari Hardwick’s Jamie be on on top of the world playing the high-profile entrepreneur / gangster who sounded like he had everything under control. If you’ve missed out on the highest rated show in Starz channel history, you may want to grab that channel. Jamie continues on his tumultuous journey of fatherhood, moving past infidelity, and constant avoidance of police interference and those within his own drug-run empire. There’s never a dull moment for Jamie but somehow he is able to to maintain his dashing style and supremeness (yes, thats a word).

Somebody tell James Bond to step aside & take notes. We were able to compile some helpful tips from Omari Hardwick’s character and learn a thing or two about getting your hands dirty but keeping your nose clean.

1. Frequent tailor visits

A basic suit can read “stylish effort” but a well tailored one signifies “sophistication.” It’s no surprise Jamie was a successful nightclub owner on the series and had to show for it. Whether he was conducting a deal, legally or illegally, the man made sure his suit game was proper and his colors coordinated. From a simple three piece suit to modeling an outfit with just a vest, we learned that its important to have access to counsel on the best styles that suit you and your personal preference. Let a tailor or someone you trust take over in order to really sport that suit and address any additional mishaps.

2. Show & Tell (the beard)

Throughout the series, Jamie keeps his facial hair growth to a minimum. Opposed to growing a full beard, the character lets his light shine on his other strong facial features and the goatee stands alone on its on constantly shaped. From a barber’s perspective, there’s a guess that a razor is including on his goatee touch ups because those that shape is super crispy. If you’re one to grow facial hair, take a look in the mirror or consult your barber on the best style to grow it. From a full beard, goatee, or simple mustaches, there’s a selection to choose from that can fitting smoothly with your heard shape.

3. Hitting the gym

Club owner by day and ruthless drug kingpin by night. We see there’s a never dull moment in Jamie’s life but somehow makes time to hit the gym. Power’s Omari Hardwick may rule his household with an iron fist but it seems as though he’s also built like it too. I guess all those hours in the gym pay and led to a character who looks like he exfoliates regularly. Sweating at the gym is a release of bodily toxins and results in fresh, vibrant skin tone like Mr. Jamie St. Patrick. His physicality, either on or off the show, remains as an model of the summer bod we’re still looking achieve. R.I.P. Hagen Danz ice cream!

4. Crown Royal

With a dark caesar and slight waves, Jamie’s  haircut is minimal yet majestic. He keeps his crown well maintained without a single spot of frizz or loose hair propping up. He must be using that Frederick Benjamin sleek water pomade. Either way, its a reminder that an outfit isn’t complete if the hair isn’t in place so keep your tools handy as it relates to this current summer heatwave.

Groom Guy Tip: It’s not only one to look like a boss but smell like one with 50 Cent’s Power cologne. Evocative of a lush forest on a cool, crisp morning, this scent attracts the attention of everyone who walks in your path and keeps you fresh and confident all day long.
