Untold Story of Polish’d Legend: Dapper Dan [WATCH]

“Fresh is something that always has to be new,” says Dapper Dan, “and always has to be potent.” He should know. The avatar of hip hop style got his start in Harlem of the 1970s designing custom “knock-ups” (as opposed to knock offs) for a who’s who of big ballers and shot callers, as well as a few rappers. From Eric B & Rakim to Kool G Rap to The Fat Boys—even Mike Tyson—Dapper Dan dressed them all. But then, during the early 1990s certain major fashion brands ran him out of business. “I had to go underground,” says Dan, who has since made a groundbreaking deal with the House of Gucci, opening boutiques in Harlem and more recently in SoHo. “I was built to start all over anyway,” says Dan. “I was NOT going to let this get away from me…. I said ‘They ain’t gonna leave me out of this.’”

Stay Polish’d Collection: Vol. 1 with Sean Mayers

From months to minutes, as we anticipate the end to another winter season that has showed its fair share of punishment on the Eastern coast. As the “Stay Polish’d” mantra continues to show itself strong within the brand’s ethos and infiltrate your bathrooms & closets, we decided to give a visual glimpse of what’re cooking up for the season. The spring season carries cold fronts, brisk winds, and demos of sunshine that’ll call for trips of confrontation to the beach (possibly). Nonetheless, Groom Guys do what we do best: and that’s deliver 100%. Groom Guys continue to keep the principle of putting your best foot forward neglecting the lionization of mainstream publications that showcase rudimentary images of “style” and “fashion.” Groom Guy (s) carry manhood, healthy morals & principles, and critical observation as the very DNA of the brand’s existence.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with the dangerously dapper and intelligent Sean Mayers, The Gentlemens Lounge. The New Jersey native has established quite a reputation as a “vintage stylistic architect gathering pieces of heritage, history, class within his portfolio. That was enough for me and camera hit maker Marcus to arrange some time on grey day in Washington D.C. & premiere our collection series. Behind the camera, we had an opportunity to discuss some stylistic details that often overlooked including accessorizing your outfits, introducing fragrances to our repertoire, and Sean educating me on multiple approaches to wearing a scarf and many more (and where Sean obtained that fly hat). Together, we are: The Groomed Gentlemen.

The Manicure Myth: A Guy’s First Experience

Lets admit it, a large portion of men don’t ever step foot into a salon for manicure or pedicure unless we’re dropping off our loved one or asking to you use to the bathroom… Some of us still struggle to pick up the nail clipper. Well the beginning of a new year should activate new practices in your routine. Take a good look at those fingers (deep into those cuticles) and chances are they need some love & affection this season. From cooking to everyday typing, our hands are used on a daily basis carrying various germs and build up.  Sometimes that maintenance is a refreshing start into a work day or any activity. Its the details that matter most for Groom Guy (s) and its time to begin that journey.

Glowing like never before!

It wasn’t until last year I was introduced to manicures and pedicures and its truly a blessing on the body. Like any man in uncharted waters, I was intimated by the flock of females in there. Luckily, I saw a guy (with calluses that could build a temple) and positioned myself alongside him. We chatted about sports and in minutes, I melted into my seat. One hour later, I couldn’t believe it was over only to ask how much additional services costs. The industry professionals (particularly women) will handle these tender parts of your body with some grace. You’ll be intrigued by how they use tools to get parts of the toes & hands you’ve never even touched. Excess skin, dryness, dirt buildup are all common skincare issues they’ll eliminate completely. From  a little massage to  a drink of champagne, its a super-mini vacation of bliss that’ll leave men feeling like polish’d Kings. Did I forget to mention there are tons of SINGLE people that dwell religiously in the salon as well? So if you’re looking to step your game up, you may want to make this a new home.

Groom Guy Tip: For beginners, a regular visit for manicure / pedicure once a month is fitting for the body & the wallet. A good, professional manicure service starts at fifteen dollars to twenty five & pedicure between twenty five to thirty.

7 Essential Grooming Tools with Justin Lamarr

We can all use a helping hand when it comes to grooming. Whether it’s picking up tips from friends or consulting with professionals, men’s grooming is a team effort. With this in mind, Groom Guy’s Justin Lamarr shares a helpful list of everyday go-to’sWhether its gearing up for work, hitting up downtown Los Angeles or joining the homies at a house party, below is some gems that’ll even assist you on your next trip to the market, local Target, or the barbershop.

1. Raw Shea Butter

I don’t quite remember who put me on to raw shea butter but I definitely owe them. I’m a pretty minimalist guy so when I finally began using shea butter I instantly fell in love. I use it as a lotion, lip balm, skin moisturizer and even on my tattoos when I want them to look a little more vibrant. Raw shea butter can be a little off putting for those not use to its gritty texture, but once you warm it up a bit in your hands, it melts down and becomes a perfect all around moisturizer.

2. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been a lifesaver for me. Growing up I used all kinds of greases and pomades on my hair to get the waves I wanted. Those products always left my hair sticky and harder to manage than before. Natural coconut oil is perfect for conditioning your hair without leaving a mess. Whether I’m keeping a fresh fade or growing out the curls, coconut oil always keeps my hair well moisturized and conditioned.

3. Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap

As you can tell from my first two essentials I’m pretty big on natural, organic products. My hygienic routine is no different. Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap is a certified fair trade product made with organic oils and no GMO’s. Because there’s little dilution in the soap, it can be extremely strong. Some dilute their soap with water before using, though personally I enjoy the strength of its cleansing properties when used raw, along with the fresh scent.

4. Beard Oil

I consider my facial hair to be a huge part of my personal style. I’m always rocking a beard, though the length tends to vary at times. Whether I’m going with the 5 o’clock shadow look or the Rick Ross beard I always make sure to apply beard oil. Beard oil is essential to keeping your facial hair conditioned while also moisturizing the skin beneath it. One of the coolest things about beard oil is the ability to mix and match scents. My personal favorite right now is “Opium Den” by The Bearded Bastard. It’s a manly scent with a hint of sweetness, perfect for a night out at a fair price of $30.00.

5. Straight Razor

Since my beard is such a large part of my style it was important for me to learn how to properly groom it myself. Working in the corporate world people notice right away when you’ve gone a while without a line up. Learning how to use a straight razor has been a thrilling and intimidating process, but there’s something unique about doing things the old school way. There aren’t too many things I enjoy more than grabbing my razor, turning on some music and getting my beard tight for the week ahead. (Groom Guy tip: Consult your local barber first for razor recommendations that best fit for your skin)

6. Altoids

So this one isn’t that big of a secret, everybody uses Altoids right? I was actually a pretty big gum person for most of my life until I took a liking to cigars. Smoking cigars is one of my favorite hobbies, though one of the drawbacks is the toll it takes on your breath when you’re done. After doing some research I found that Altoids were the PERFECT solution to cigar mouth. They eliminate the smokey feel and give you a minty taste in no time. I keep a pack of Altoids on me at all times.

7. Dior Sauvage Cologne

I really shouldn’t be giving this one away but hey, each one teach one J. Colognes can be tricky for the simple fact that everyone’s natural chemicals react differently to various scents. What smells great on one guy might smell terrible on another. Thankfully I found my go-to cologne a few years ago and haven’t looked back since. Dior Sauvage is understated yet commanding all at once. I always recommend guys take the time out to find the cologne that’s right for them, maybe Dior Sauvage might be the one for you as well.

First Look: Supreme + Andis Cordless Clipper

Barbering just kicked up a notch. If you know anything about Supreme it remains a timeless brand of street-luxury. It may not necessarily be a religion but it might as well be with its worldwide congregation of devout followers / buyers stretching ages 15-35 (estimated worth $40 mil). Supreme continues to push the envelope of development with collaborations over the years that still have customers salivating. This morning, my friend texted me this photo of the newest one with hair product powerhouse: Andis. Since I’ve been a barber, I’ve never seen or heard any type of collabs coming from Andis so this is huge. The original Envy Adjustable is a staple in the hair community and foundational tool for basic fading, designs etc. If hair business needed a new face lift, I think Supreme single handedly did that with this. At the moment, few details have been revealed on the company site. Stay tuned.

Will we see more brand collaborations like this in the hair industry? Is streetwear making its way to grooming? Hit us with your final thoughts.

The Blind Barber: 3 Easy Ways to Look Fresh in the New Year

This article was originally written on Edit Express

As part of our new grooming series, we’re talking with some of the best barbers in the business to bring you the tips and tricks to staying handsome, from the boardroom to the bedroom.

Looking sharp isn’t rocket science, but it is something that needs a little attention. For our first installment we caught up with master barber Julien over at the Blind Barber in New York about the best ways to start your manscaping adventures. From scoring the perfect cut to the must-have tools for keeping that mane looking tip-top, ensuring your New Year gets off to a fresh start.

When considering a grooming regiment, what should guys do to affect the health of their hair and skin?

Men are usually simple creatures. We tend to not over do anything and stick to keeping it simple. Sometimes that leads us to forget some key things. One big thing that I’ve seen many men do is leave product in their hair at night. Some think it’ll be one less step they have to do in the morning when they’re getting ready,  but they’re not doing themselves any favors. Product you leave in your hair at night gets on your pillow. When you lay your face on your pillow it picks it up leading to clogged pores, pimples, or overall bad skin. You should always rinse your hair out at night to remove any product, even if you aren’t shampooing daily.  Clean hair = healthy hair = beautiful face.

When deciding on a new cut for the new year, what are a few things to keep in mind when talking to your barber?

A picture speaks a thousand words. Showing your barber a few photos of something you’d like can help remove a lot of the “guess work”. Pictures give the barber a better understanding of which direction you’re leaning for your hair. But, remember that some hair types appear different in person than they do in a photograph. It’s best to start with a clipper size that leaves your hair a little longer. You can always go shorter, but you can’t magically grow hair mid cut. Most of the popular haircuts you see nowadays have some variation of a fade. So you can say you want a high, medium, or low fade depending on the look and style you’re shooting for. Your barber will know the difference. Tapering your hair is always a go to. “Squaring off” or “rounding out” the neckline will give your hair an unnatural look when it’s growing back out. Asking for a taper is a classic move that will ensure that every cut you get, will leave you looking fresher longer.

What are a few products or tools every guy should own that will keep him looking fresh?

Every man should have some sort of styling product. From a pomade, to a wax or cream, a leave in conditioner, mousse – you name it. We all have bad hair days and every man can appreciate a helping hand in holding over until the next cut. If you don’t already own one, you can borrow a hair dryer from a friend or main squeeze. Blow dry your hair in the desired direction until the style you want is achieved. Hair dryers are life savers especially for those tricky cowlicks. Water based products are best for your hair. They do not damage it by drying it out or causing flakiness. Plus, they wash out easily. These water based products are best to use after the shower when your hair is towel dry. They go in evenly and won’t have you looking like Cameron Diaz in that one movie… Blind Barber’s 90 Proof is perfect if you’re looking for a matte finish with a stronger hold. It’s ideal for men that desire a natural look that lasts all day. For a little more shine, Blind Barber’s 60 Proof has an amazing finish with enough hold to define and enhance your look. Great for bringing out texture and reducing frizz.

Funky Grooming Habits to Retire This Spring (Part 1)

We’re moments away from kissing the winter cold goodbye. It’s about that time to dump those wool sweater / jackets into storage and retrieve those windbreakers. But its in the midst of the seasonal wardrobe change, your grooming routine needs the same, if not MORE, love and attention. Remember when you promised yourself you’d do a better job this year? Well, here’s your shot!

But before we welcome all the and exciting products to stock up on, I had to make sure your aware of the foolish habits that have to be recycled this spring. Out with the old…..and just STAY OUT!

Trim down the body hair

It was probably cute in the beginning. You had your date really getting amused twisting your body hair but now its about that time. The more body hair you keep on during this season is a welcome ticket to sweat and body odor especially if you’re juggling an alleged athletic schedule. So be sure to trim in all places (including in your basement). Trust me, she’ll thank you later. The Wahl Hero trimmer is one I keep in my personal arsenal and absolutely love! It’s powerful and takes clean all types of air evenly for a valued price.

Be sure to tidy up that facial hair especially my bearded men. Don’t wait until you’ve got Gandalf’s Lord of the Rings beard for a touch up and simply show it some clipper attention every two weeks.

Wahl Hero Trimmer

Fingernail takedown

There’s tons of slack that can be given to the elongated fingernails during the winter. We can’t hid in the dark forever. Tis the season to pull out that nail clipper making sure to cut down at least once a week. If you won’t, that day in the sun will reveal it all….all that dirt packed up in your nails. Don’t be that person getting caught trying to remove the dirt from one nail using the other!

C’mon bruh…

Change your toothbrush

Although we can celebrate your toothbrush has been steady since 2015-16, we can also celebrate the amount of germs that have contaminated on the bristles. American Dental Association explains exactly why and also other helpful tips to extend the life of your toothbrush.

In some circumstances, you should replace your toothbrush even if the bristles are not visibly frayed. When you’ve been sick with a cold or flu, or have had a mouth or throat infection, sore throat, or a mouth sore, you should replace your toothbrush even if it’s new. Doing so will help prevent re-exposing yourself or others in your household to germs that could cause an illness.

Replace socks

I’d be lying if I said hole habit in the sock is tolerable and I haven’t done it….because it’s totally not. We set ourselves up for shame once your significant other takes sight of that. It showcases poor effort & showmanship in oneself. It also allows for possible fungal odors as sweat buildup increasing during the warm spring weather. Your winter socks have been thru an mild, odor war. It’s time to give them a facelift with some new 100% cotton love of fresh socks. Don’t be weary of popping your sock game with some color too. A little goes a long way!

“Pharrelleva Young” – 3 Critical Grooming Lessons We Learned From Pharrell Williams

It’s no surprise one of the most versatile artists of our generation is Pharrell Williams. From celebrated producer, film composer, philanthropist just to name a few, it continues to amaze us to see his inability to age…at least show it. Over the years, you’ll fail to point any type of wrinkle or grey hair on his head? How? Why?

We were able to finally compile three solid reasons why after a couple research interviews.

  1. Readily hydrated
  2. Exfoliation
  3. Red meat reduction

Hydration

He explains in a couple archived interviews that a lot of his daily intake is good ol’ H2O. “You know, I guess, its lots of water” says Pharrell. We can hardly imagine anything less then water would suffice considering this man probably travels to Dubai and London while on a “lunch break.” We can also assume that from the late studio nights to early music compositions with Hans Zimmer, he’s not touching any Deer Park or Poland Spring bottles. An creative of his stature likes to load up on Core Water.

Exfoliation

It’s probably one of the most overused words you hear your girlfriend saying but its about time you understand it. The term “exfoliate” simply means the act of removing, in this case, dead skin cells. So we’re sure in between his private studio sessions & hosting gigs, Pharrell adds this routine to his schedule. Keep the skin refreshed & clean with a weekly regimen of exfoliation 2-3 times a week.

Red Meat Reduction

Although there is no proven facts surfacing that red meat indeed affects ones overall health including skin & aging, Pharrell remind us to enjoy in moderation. He’s not only a proud Southerner (Virginia native) but he also shares that he treats his stomach to classic BBQ….and so can you. I can add that you do lower your chances of any type of reaction to red meat when slimming your intake. Producers of red meat, like your local super market, does have a reputation for having extremely questionable methods of chemically-enhanced farming. The less chemicals the better!

Thank You Mr. President: 4 Lifetime Grooming Tips We’ll Never Forget

If you’re like us, then you were shocked to know that President Obama’s reign of supremacy is sadly coming to a close. He spoke last night at his Farewell Address to the America people in a tone of tranquility and victory. He deserves the various accolades for his continued strides & passionate efforts on looking out for the overall, common good of the American people….which now seems highly questionable with our newly President-elect (no, I won’t bother saying his name).

In the midst of maintaining his duties as commander-in-chief, we couldn’t help but notice some outstanding grooming tips from President Obama. We have to recognized his staying power to age gracefully and pick up some really helpful tips on how to look like a worldwide “Boss” and certainly look the part. Here’s what we’ve scooped over the last eight years from the President Obama:

  1. Embracing the grey

We can imagine being the leader of the free world is no easy task and can bring loads of stress. But if I’m under any stress like this, I’m definitely trying to age like this guy. We can never truly escape wrinkles, unless you’re Pharrell Williams, and President Obama has proven that the wrinkles & grey on his hair can makes it way in smoothly. There’s no JustForMen touching that scalp. The Prez has learned to fully embrace his grey’s and they’ve returned to him with a graceful presence that signifies prestige, wisdom, and a wealth of knowledge & experience. So don’t be that guy fighting the “day of the grey”.

2. “The Obama Cut”

The President may be one of the most powerful man in the world but he still needs his haircut too. We can’t assume that it magically looks like that during his White House Press speeches. There is a man hired to make sure he looks sharp named Zariff. The native Chicago barber has climbed to fame during President Obama’s term due to his ability to quietly keep the Prez polish’d and neat with his frequent barber trips. According to his interview with Essence:

The Obama cut is a custom cut. It came about in 2004 when Mr. Obama came into the shop and said he was speaking at the Democratic National Convention that evening. So I had to make him look sharp. Before that he was wearing his hair longer and a little curlier. I took it down to a short cut, tapered on the sides, back and neck. I wanted it to look more natural. – Zariff (President Obama’s Barber)

3. Radiant Skin

Whether its First Lady Michelle making sure he doesn’t leave the house looking a hot, dry mess or someone in his cabinet, the Prez continues to shine in front of the camera. We can barely spot any type of pimple or skin blemish. We’re guessing someone must have put him onto the newest Scotch Porter’s face charcoal wash or Mallin & Goetz. Either way, there’s no vaseline hitting his face & the daily skincare shows. Now its your turn…

4. Pearly Whites

I’ve ran across my fair share of C-Span correspondents and televised politicians who love showing their grillz and I’m not talking their 14K gold. Unfortunately, these “gold fronts” weren’t the ones you bought from your local dealer but from their leftover dinners they refused to brush out properly. Nothing could be worse then smiling for millions of American people with unkept teeth. President Obama is was one of the happiest presidents I’ve seen photographed. I would too if my teeth graced to cover of t-shirts, posters, and TV screens across the globe. I’m sure his dental plan isn’t cheap but well worth it. He continues to model those shiners (100% real too) with pride. It should make us want to spend an extra two minutes brushing in morning (and at night).
