Product Review: Scotch Porter Collection (Part 1)

Is a new weekly series that spotlights grooming products in our personal arsenal that we use regularly. From barbers to clients, its real products tested in real time. Please note: We are not personally endorsed by brands. 100% authentic evaluations & testing.

Looking for a product line that covers all bases from beard hydration to a skin care regimen is hard especially one that is formulated for ethnic skin and hair type. I’ve heard so much about scotch porter and how great the product was but only problem was it good for me after spending hundreds of dollars with trial and error I was reluctant of trying something new, but I did!

I first stated with the Scotch Porter charcoal and licorice exfoliating face scrub and being one who has struggled with mild break outs as a teen, I have come to appreciate my adult skin and take it very seriously. I used a dime size amount of the face scrub and started with small circles cleansing my face the sent was very light and calming and the exfoliant beads were not hard or course at all. After rinsing my face and patting it dry it felt clean but not dry and with a small amount of moisturizer left from the wash on my face.

On to the moisturizing, beard wash was very light send again the small 1oz bottle was not squeezable like the face wash bottle was so taking off the cap and shaking in it in my hand was what was needed to extract the product. When I applied it to my beard I worked it in from skin to tip, it didn’t lather heavy at all, but I could see the product wash out into the sink very easily. Groom Guy Tip: Use about a quarter size amount on a thick and long beard.

After the beard wash I moved on to the beard serum and immediately I got a whiff of nostalgia the serum smelled like Duke hair pomade I could be wrong but it smelled great.I applied 2 drops into my hand and worked it in from skin to tip, used a wooden comb to work the product through, and it felt soft and had a mild shine to it. With products I’ve used in the past I had to add heat to achieve the uncoiling of my beard but with this I didn’t at all.

Beard Chronicles, Beardcare

Introducing “Beard Chronicles” with Antoine Smart

I decided to start the Beard Chronicles series in 2013 after growing my beard and noticing more and more guys were growing beards as well.  Through my love for photography I have been able to give bearded men a platform to share their beard journey story. This series has allowed me to meet and make friends from DC all the way to LA. Learning about different guys beard journeys I have developed an interest in grooming and wellness tips for Black men.  Also, from photographing and interviewing for Beard Chronicles I have been able to tap into another creative area: writing.  I have written four blogs in the past year topics including: beards in business to mental health wellness in the Black community.

Workout Reminders For A Healthy Beard

For guys, working out is a time to restore focus and order into our lives. We pump iron with the intent to rebuild our body image. But that same self care effort dedicated to our bodies is required of us with facial hair, in particular bearded men; but many clients seem to forget this. Exercise is a great way to tackle issues like oily skin by flushing out toxins; but let’s make sure we set ourselves up for the complete win.

Your beard and the skin around it is a sensitive area. If proper care isn’t given, it can lead to ingrown hairs, breakage, and facial odor. Below we’ve listed some helpful tips for a quick routine that will ensure your beard survives your next sweat outbreak.

Step 1: Pre-Workout Rinse

Like a splash of water on the face in the morning, the beard could use the same wake up just before your workout. Warm water hydrates the hair and opens up the pores and is a defense wall for incoming sweat resulting from the impending workout. The additional, warm moisture from the water also helps the hair strand maintain its natural direction and healthy growth from its follicles.

Step 2: Comb Out

By the end of a workout, the hair strands have been exposed to various temperatures that can allow it to curl up, break, or become susceptible to split ends. After a rinse, a quick comb out of the beard hairs is necessary to expand and fall in its natural direction. Be sure to comb in the given direction of the hair strands. I’ve also found that separating the thick hair strands out before a workout controls sweat direction (allowing sweat to fall downward onto the ground). The more you comb out the hair the easier it’ll be for the beard wash to reach the root during your post workout shower and wash.

Step 3: Beard Wash

After a full hour of dumbbell lifts and ab work, your beard is packed with brittleness, possible closed pores, and irritated sweat glands. To combat that and restore your beard back to its natural pH, beard wash is critical. Unlike hair shampoo, beard wash is packed with fewer surfactants (surfactants are a gateway to skin and beard irritation). Refrain from using shampoos on your beard because the chemical properties can be too harsh and ultimately harmful for sensitive areas like facial hair. Beard washes from companies like Scotch Porter are packed with the proper nutrients and are chemically balanced to fight against sweat and the additional dirt and grime you pick up while pumping iron.

Step 4: Restore moisture with Beard Conditioner

Once the wash has done its cleansing job, chances are the natural oils on the hair strands have been removed. Conditioning your beard will restore full moisture back into your hair follicles leading to healthy growth. It will also serve as a defense leading into your next workout and the heat and sweat you’ll experience. The conditioner should be applied directly onto the hair strands to effectively do its job.

Master Barber Tip: To maintain healthy and steady growth that can withstand your next workout, equip yourself with some cordless trimmers and restore the shape to your beard by giving yourself a quick trim. After one last rinse (using cool water), you’ll be ready for the rest of your day.

Diddy Officially Joins Beard Gang

When he’s not being predicted by Forbes as the first hip hop billionaires or Diddy bopping in his newest music video, Puff Daddy continues to exemplify the true definition of “Renaissance man.” In the midst of his many accomplishments and business ventures, he still finds time to keep his grooming routine on par. He remains as one our groomer spotlights.

He recently appeared pictured with Jay-Z at the Roc Nation party during Grammy weekend this year. Not only were we greeted with his fly salmon color suit but his beard has made its grand return. It looks as though he’s sporting a more natural grow out of his hair as he climbs up the age ladder (5-0 years old in three years). Puffy continues to keep us amused via Instagram of his habitual grooming practices. Either way, he’s aging gracefully and we’re happy to see him join the beard family. Jay-Z take notes…

Below we’ve listed some immediate beard favorites Diddy’s barber may want to introduce him to and you’ll want to get your hands on this upcoming Spring:
