Product Review: Scotch Porter Collection (Part 1)

Is a new weekly series that spotlights grooming products in our personal arsenal that we use regularly. From barbers to clients, its real products tested in real time. Please note: We are not personally endorsed by brands. 100% authentic evaluations & testing.

Looking for a product line that covers all bases from beard hydration to a skin care regimen is hard especially one that is formulated for ethnic skin and hair type. I’ve heard so much about scotch porter and how great the product was but only problem was it good for me after spending hundreds of dollars with trial and error I was reluctant of trying something new, but I did!

I first stated with the Scotch Porter charcoal and licorice exfoliating face scrub and being one who has struggled with mild break outs as a teen, I have come to appreciate my adult skin and take it very seriously. I used a dime size amount of the face scrub and started with small circles cleansing my face the sent was very light and calming and the exfoliant beads were not hard or course at all. After rinsing my face and patting it dry it felt clean but not dry and with a small amount of moisturizer left from the wash on my face.

On to the moisturizing, beard wash was very light send again the small 1oz bottle was not squeezable like the face wash bottle was so taking off the cap and shaking in it in my hand was what was needed to extract the product. When I applied it to my beard I worked it in from skin to tip, it didn’t lather heavy at all, but I could see the product wash out into the sink very easily. Groom Guy Tip: Use about a quarter size amount on a thick and long beard.

After the beard wash I moved on to the beard serum and immediately I got a whiff of nostalgia the serum smelled like Duke hair pomade I could be wrong but it smelled great.I applied 2 drops into my hand and worked it in from skin to tip, used a wooden comb to work the product through, and it felt soft and had a mild shine to it. With products I’ve used in the past I had to add heat to achieve the uncoiling of my beard but with this I didn’t at all.

Stay Polish’d Collection: Vol. 2

Every moment I get to step out of the barbershop, I’m reminded how precious time is. During this cold winter be sure to remain on your craft and keep working towards your goal. This time around I had the privilege of collaborating with the talented snapshot sensation Maeva The Radiant. We chopped it up after we sharing our thoughts on the imagery and what it means to “Stay Polish’d.” She communicated that eloquently thru her visual language of the camera lens during this shoot. Her passion for menswear shooting began a couple years back and she’s been letting her passion catarpault thru various outlets while working with power players & locals alike.

My passion for vintage shopping has grown a lot over the years. My personal style or “polish” has been reinvented as I’m introduced to vintage and timeless brands and pieces that may have never been properly showcased in the previous hands.  My mind races composing colors combinations, fabrics, pieces paired with grooming tools as I pace thru clothing aisle. I always try to leave with something during my vintage shopping trips that can be an additive to the personal closet. Throughout this shoot, Maeva & I kept theme of street royalty as our visual aid and guide towards what styling combinations were formed, poses, colors etc. Paying homage to the greats like Dapper Dan and those in the 1940s and 50s who helped shaped menswear culture.

Hair + Grooming

The routine is pretty consistent when it comes to photoshoots or special events. From a facial moisturizer to hydrating my curls with a hair cream, I keep that on rotation. I make sure to wash my hair every three days and shampoo only once or twice a week (unless at the gym). A fresh head leads to maximum results for any styling product. Shea butter is a must for any event since its properties heal any cracked or dry skin especially as a barber. In this case I’ll add a face toner just give my face a bit more of a lift and wake it up.

Clothing

A lot of this look is direct inspiration of the Harlem Renaissance. During that time, casual wear was considered a button down shirt and dress pants. Fast forward into 21st century, I still like to maintain that same uniformed look. A white shirt is stable for any man and you should always be equipped with a couple of those in your arsenal at home (look for Charles Twitt, Club Monaco, Zara to name a few). They’re affordable and can be worn on any occasion. I scooped the pants from a thrift store and although they have pleats, they compliment my size (since I’m packed with thighs). The pattern pants color may have some age but can be reinvented with the proper suit jacket and/or simple accessories.

Accessories

This is what can make turn an entire outfit upside down. Without my accessories, this outfit can easily look like I belong in cubicle somewhere on Wall Street but the small details make it your own. A gold watch brings flavorful. A brimmed hat has the ability to elevate a look entirely making you the person to watch the moment you step into the room. Be careful with colorful hats and make sure it doesn’t clash with an outfit. Black and white shirts are great neutrals to set the stage for a colorful hat like this.

The nails get overshadowed but a critical apart of a person’s upkeep. No person wants to shake a dirty hand or feel that scrap long their skin because you choose to grow out your fingernails. Decorating the hands with rings is a matter of taste and should be layered with caution. All of my rings are vintage style and taken from some shopping experience I’ve had.

Groom Guy Releases “Product Reviews” Series & Premieres Daily Styling Cream

Is a new weekly series that spotlights grooming products in our personal arsenal that we use regularly. From barbers to clients, its real products tested in real time. Please note: We are not personally endorsed or paid by brands.

On tough hair days, most of the time we’re looking for some sort of moisture (other than water) that’ll wake up our hair & get us out the house. We desperately scan thru for something easy and that does the job. Groom Guy debuts the first product line sent to us in our collection since our initial launch a year or so back: Frederick Benjamin Daily Hydrator. I’ve managed to see this 4.2 ounce bottle live longer than any plant I keep in my apartment. With a small dosage, this hair cream has some maximum power of hydration and leaves my hair feeling silky smooth, keeps my curls tight and defined & loose strains hydrated. It’s a super lightweight cream that easily dissolves into the hands so a little goes a long way. It’s grease free and packed with ingredients that penetrate the scalp effectively (activating blood flow). It’s truly a “daily” tool providing that essential amount of moisture for my hair regardless of any weather condition.

The Fredrick Benjamin Styling cream is top notch. It’s light has a “great scent” styles your hair the way you need and leaves your hair feeling product free and weightless. I personally don’t like feeling like I have a ton of product in my hair and neither do my clients.
Two thumbs up for a five star product.

Valjean Guerra, Cathedra NYC (@cathedranyc)

If you’re looking for a styling tool with super tight, staying power, this will NOT be for you. That’s the only hiccup with a typical cream. You’ll want to search something that’s stronger and has more possible control.

Type: Lightweight Cream
How to use:  A nickel size goes a long way easily dissolving into the hands. Be generous with your hands and run your fingers thru the mid shaft to the tips of hair.
Great for: Typical work day. Date Night.
Best Hair Types: Curls, Afro/texture hair, mid or wavy
Helpful tools: Curl Sponge (use this after applying), durag for waves prep.

Stay Polish’d Collection: Vol. 1 with Sean Mayers

From months to minutes, as we anticipate the end to another winter season that has showed its fair share of punishment on the Eastern coast. As the “Stay Polish’d” mantra continues to show itself strong within the brand’s ethos and infiltrate your bathrooms & closets, we decided to give a visual glimpse of what’re cooking up for the season. The spring season carries cold fronts, brisk winds, and demos of sunshine that’ll call for trips of confrontation to the beach (possibly). Nonetheless, Groom Guys do what we do best: and that’s deliver 100%. Groom Guys continue to keep the principle of putting your best foot forward neglecting the lionization of mainstream publications that showcase rudimentary images of “style” and “fashion.” Groom Guy (s) carry manhood, healthy morals & principles, and critical observation as the very DNA of the brand’s existence.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with the dangerously dapper and intelligent Sean Mayers, The Gentlemens Lounge. The New Jersey native has established quite a reputation as a “vintage stylistic architect gathering pieces of heritage, history, class within his portfolio. That was enough for me and camera hit maker Marcus to arrange some time on grey day in Washington D.C. & premiere our collection series. Behind the camera, we had an opportunity to discuss some stylistic details that often overlooked including accessorizing your outfits, introducing fragrances to our repertoire, and Sean educating me on multiple approaches to wearing a scarf and many more (and where Sean obtained that fly hat). Together, we are: The Groomed Gentlemen.

Funky Grooming Habits to Retire This Spring (Part 1)

We’re moments away from kissing the winter cold goodbye. It’s about that time to dump those wool sweater / jackets into storage and retrieve those windbreakers. But its in the midst of the seasonal wardrobe change, your grooming routine needs the same, if not MORE, love and attention. Remember when you promised yourself you’d do a better job this year? Well, here’s your shot!

But before we welcome all the and exciting products to stock up on, I had to make sure your aware of the foolish habits that have to be recycled this spring. Out with the old…..and just STAY OUT!

Trim down the body hair

It was probably cute in the beginning. You had your date really getting amused twisting your body hair but now its about that time. The more body hair you keep on during this season is a welcome ticket to sweat and body odor especially if you’re juggling an alleged athletic schedule. So be sure to trim in all places (including in your basement). Trust me, she’ll thank you later. The Wahl Hero trimmer is one I keep in my personal arsenal and absolutely love! It’s powerful and takes clean all types of air evenly for a valued price.

Be sure to tidy up that facial hair especially my bearded men. Don’t wait until you’ve got Gandalf’s Lord of the Rings beard for a touch up and simply show it some clipper attention every two weeks.

Fingernail takedown

There’s tons of slack that can be given to the elongated fingernails during the winter. We can’t hid in the dark forever. Tis the season to pull out that nail clipper making sure to cut down at least once a week. If you won’t, that day in the sun will reveal it all….all that dirt packed up in your nails. Don’t be that person getting caught trying to remove the dirt from one nail using the other!

C’mon bruh…

Change your toothbrush

Although we can celebrate your toothbrush has been steady since 2015-16, we can also celebrate the amount of germs that have contaminated on the bristles. American Dental Association explains exactly why and also other helpful tips to extend the life of your toothbrush.

In some circumstances, you should replace your toothbrush even if the bristles are not visibly frayed. When you’ve been sick with a cold or flu, or have had a mouth or throat infection, sore throat, or a mouth sore, you should replace your toothbrush even if it’s new. Doing so will help prevent re-exposing yourself or others in your household to germs that could cause an illness.

Replace socks

I’d be lying if I said hole habit in the sock is tolerable and I haven’t done it….because it’s totally not. We set ourselves up for shame once your significant other takes sight of that. It showcases poor effort & showmanship in oneself. It also allows for possible fungal odors as sweat buildup increasing during the warm spring weather. Your winter socks have been thru an mild, odor war. It’s time to give them a facelift with some new 100% cotton love of fresh socks. Don’t be weary of popping your sock game with some color too. A little goes a long way!

Diddy Officially Joins Beard Gang

When he’s not being predicted by Forbes as the first hip hop billionaires or Diddy bopping in his newest music video, Puff Daddy continues to exemplify the true definition of “Renaissance man.” In the midst of his many accomplishments and business ventures, he still finds time to keep his grooming routine on par. He remains as one our groomer spotlights.

He recently appeared pictured with Jay-Z at the Roc Nation party during Grammy weekend this year. Not only were we greeted with his fly salmon color suit but his beard has made its grand return. It looks as though he’s sporting a more natural grow out of his hair as he climbs up the age ladder (5-0 years old in three years). Puffy continues to keep us amused via Instagram of his habitual grooming practices. Either way, he’s aging gracefully and we’re happy to see him join the beard family. Jay-Z take notes…

Below we’ve listed some immediate beard favorites Diddy’s barber may want to introduce him to and you’ll want to get your hands on this upcoming Spring:
