Boost your “Under Armor” with these quick tips

Its that season again. It’s about that time to rummage thru that drawer of yours and dump those underwear. From little holes to the torn waist band straps, you should no longer subject yourself to that “undergarment torment.” It’s a Groom Guy principle that we work on ourselves from the inside out… so yes that does include the inside of your attire. Gone are those days of those same tired [often plaid color] boxers you’ve been sporting since high school & college years. After coping with this unforgiving heat and the daily sweat that builds up underneath, its time to put those undergarments into overdrive. Don’t count the holes in your collection to finally dump them. Elevate your game and experience the transformational power of premium underwear.

This year, I’ve taken a very detailed approach to buying  the most comfortable underwear on the planet. Don’t believe the hype (sorry, not sorry, Calvin Klein) and get ready to load up on 100% comfort. Below is some of the most important gems when purchasing your first premium set of underwear that’ll have you never wanting to take them off (literally).

Waist band control

This is the “crown” of under garment wear. There is absolutely no excuse you should wear loose ones that don’t hug onto the waist. It’s not a waist trainer so make sure it doesn’t suffocate your waist. At the gym, the waistband comfortably collects  any sweat build up from racing down to the leg. You’ll want to ensure your waistband is wide and has a soft logo placement (doesn’t leave any marks). The stretch factor is important too especially…after those steak dinners.

Hit the “sack”

Your day can easily determined by this simple observation: Nicely & neatly tucked jewels. Believe it or not, but this is the bread and butter of underwear comfort. Nobody wants to blue balls (or red, purple or any other color for that matter). This should be a painless process fitting and shouldn’t require much maneuvering. Your jewels can sit comfortably with underwear that includes a contoured pinch for that ideal fit.

Cutt the [cotton] Crap

Too many times I’ve purchase underwear only have to deal with the ongoing stress: rising up. This is one of the most annoying imperfections of the major brands (yes, Calvin Klein). They’ll counter by noting its “100% pure cotton” failing to tell you that the fabric is thin cotton and barely layers onto your waist with ease. You’ll feel like a sumo wrestler wearing a Fundoshi at the end of the day and wedgies as deep as the Grand Canyon.

Certain colors are recommended to be avoided (cough, white). They don’t rinse well no matter how many times and leave gross permanent stains that make it highly questionable to wear again. My recent safest and sexy recommendations include: navy, grey, maroon, olive green. Trust me, your significant other won’t be disappointed.

An active lifestyle calls for a superior fabric that’s conducive to daily movement: performance boxer briefs. These are the major key to comfort. Many of these underwear types are packed with a premium standard of flat lock stitching, a flexible stretch, flying opening for versatility and incredibly lightweight. Did I mention they’re extremely affordable! Don’t fall for the major brand marketing smoke and jump onboard to keep those jewels of yours in a case that always keeps it fresh, clean and even shining.

Stay Polish’d Collection: Vol. 1 with Sean Mayers

From months to minutes, as we anticipate the end to another winter season that has showed its fair share of punishment on the Eastern coast. As the “Stay Polish’d” mantra continues to show itself strong within the brand’s ethos and infiltrate your bathrooms & closets, we decided to give a visual glimpse of what’re cooking up for the season. The spring season carries cold fronts, brisk winds, and demos of sunshine that’ll call for trips of confrontation to the beach (possibly). Nonetheless, Groom Guys do what we do best: and that’s deliver 100%. Groom Guys continue to keep the principle of putting your best foot forward neglecting the lionization of mainstream publications that showcase rudimentary images of “style” and “fashion.” Groom Guy (s) carry manhood, healthy morals & principles, and critical observation as the very DNA of the brand’s existence.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with the dangerously dapper and intelligent Sean Mayers, The Gentlemens Lounge. The New Jersey native has established quite a reputation as a “vintage stylistic architect gathering pieces of heritage, history, class within his portfolio. That was enough for me and camera hit maker Marcus to arrange some time on grey day in Washington D.C. & premiere our collection series. Behind the camera, we had an opportunity to discuss some stylistic details that often overlooked including accessorizing your outfits, introducing fragrances to our repertoire, and Sean educating me on multiple approaches to wearing a scarf and many more (and where Sean obtained that fly hat). Together, we are: The Groomed Gentlemen.

7 Essential Grooming Tools with Justin Lamarr

We can all use a helping hand when it comes to grooming. Whether it’s picking up tips from friends or consulting with professionals, men’s grooming is a team effort. With this in mind, Groom Guy’s Justin Lamarr shares a helpful list of everyday go-to’sWhether its gearing up for work, hitting up downtown Los Angeles or joining the homies at a house party, below is some gems that’ll even assist you on your next trip to the market, local Target, or the barbershop.

1. Raw Shea Butter

I don’t quite remember who put me on to raw shea butter but I definitely owe them. I’m a pretty minimalist guy so when I finally began using shea butter I instantly fell in love. I use it as a lotion, lip balm, skin moisturizer and even on my tattoos when I want them to look a little more vibrant. Raw shea butter can be a little off putting for those not use to its gritty texture, but once you warm it up a bit in your hands, it melts down and becomes a perfect all around moisturizer.

2. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been a lifesaver for me. Growing up I used all kinds of greases and pomades on my hair to get the waves I wanted. Those products always left my hair sticky and harder to manage than before. Natural coconut oil is perfect for conditioning your hair without leaving a mess. Whether I’m keeping a fresh fade or growing out the curls, coconut oil always keeps my hair well moisturized and conditioned.

3. Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap

As you can tell from my first two essentials I’m pretty big on natural, organic products. My hygienic routine is no different. Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap is a certified fair trade product made with organic oils and no GMO’s. Because there’s little dilution in the soap, it can be extremely strong. Some dilute their soap with water before using, though personally I enjoy the strength of its cleansing properties when used raw, along with the fresh scent.

4. Beard Oil

I consider my facial hair to be a huge part of my personal style. I’m always rocking a beard, though the length tends to vary at times. Whether I’m going with the 5 o’clock shadow look or the Rick Ross beard I always make sure to apply beard oil. Beard oil is essential to keeping your facial hair conditioned while also moisturizing the skin beneath it. One of the coolest things about beard oil is the ability to mix and match scents. My personal favorite right now is “Opium Den” by The Bearded Bastard. It’s a manly scent with a hint of sweetness, perfect for a night out at a fair price of $30.00.

5. Straight Razor

Since my beard is such a large part of my style it was important for me to learn how to properly groom it myself. Working in the corporate world people notice right away when you’ve gone a while without a line up. Learning how to use a straight razor has been a thrilling and intimidating process, but there’s something unique about doing things the old school way. There aren’t too many things I enjoy more than grabbing my razor, turning on some music and getting my beard tight for the week ahead. (Groom Guy tip: Consult your local barber first for razor recommendations that best fit for your skin)

6. Altoids

So this one isn’t that big of a secret, everybody uses Altoids right? I was actually a pretty big gum person for most of my life until I took a liking to cigars. Smoking cigars is one of my favorite hobbies, though one of the drawbacks is the toll it takes on your breath when you’re done. After doing some research I found that Altoids were the PERFECT solution to cigar mouth. They eliminate the smokey feel and give you a minty taste in no time. I keep a pack of Altoids on me at all times.

7. Dior Sauvage Cologne

I really shouldn’t be giving this one away but hey, each one teach one J. Colognes can be tricky for the simple fact that everyone’s natural chemicals react differently to various scents. What smells great on one guy might smell terrible on another. Thankfully I found my go-to cologne a few years ago and haven’t looked back since. Dior Sauvage is understated yet commanding all at once. I always recommend guys take the time out to find the cologne that’s right for them, maybe Dior Sauvage might be the one for you as well.

Lifestyle Tips for Transitioning Into a New Season

As featured on Scotch Porter Journal

With the changing season, it’s a revolving door of certain habits. It’s time to switch up the plays a bit. Out with the old and in with new could mean an introduction to anything from new fashion styles to seasonal drinks that hit just right in the cooler months (apple cider never disappoints). Either way, there’s a process of evaluation that can lead to smart and healthy choices for a seamless and fun season change. Be open to new opportunities and possibilities this time around. You’ll be surprised by the outcome and how much more about yourself that could possibly be revealed. But first, let’s place a few old habits under the microscope; they could use a little love and attention as we approach fall and winter.

Dig & Discover

Before you unfold those same sweaters and caps you’ve been wearing consecutively for the past two fall’s, ask yourself the critical question: Is it time? A fresh clean out of a wardrobe sets the tone of your style. There may be some things in your closet that can use a slight upgrade. Layering is a stylistic approach that requires attention to detail but shouts “fashion expert.” From various color palettes to different materials (like cashmere or wool), take a little more style-risk this upcoming season. Just because your morning coffee is predictable doesn’t mean your style has to be. Dive into your closet or clothes drawer and give some extra thought to where you would like to take your style. See this as an opportunity to be a blessing to someone else; donate your unwanted clothes to a center, Goodwill, or local church. Let the wardrobe showdown begin…

Atomic Grooming Bomb

As we kiss goodbye to the super hot weather and welcome some cooler winds our body hair shouldn’t have to suffer. We stress the importance of a grooming routine so be thorough and make a few adjustments each season to keep you looking your best no matter the forecast. Allowing facial hair to grow a couple inches longer is permissible and gives grace to your razor. If you haven’t been doing so already, take the time to retire your toothbrush and restock your toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash. If your current toothpaste isn’t cutting it, don’t be afraid to take a chance on a new one; you’d be surprised to see the options out there.

Sweat is a constant so staying equipped with the proper tools of defense is a necessity. This includes practices like changing your bath towels every couple of days. With a new day also comes a new scent, so research seasonal ones that will complement your daily style. You’ll want to hang up the lightweight, aquatic, summery scents and go for more musky, earthy and especially woodsy ones that will make you irresistible and cool.

Welcome Back Beard

If you threw in the towel on your beard earlier this summer, now is the time to redeem yourself. As the transition approaches, now would be the perfect time to let that stubble shine bright. Proper upkeep during the early stages can lead to full, healthy growth as it gets colder. The beard is more than just a stylistic choice but a lifestyle that demonstrates consistency, effort, and attention to detail. Who’s going to say no thank you to that? The Scotch Porter Beard Collection has everything you need to get your beard where you want it, feeling smooth, and looking full. Give those facial hairs your full attention and watch what it does for your relationships. Laugh out loud!

Showtime at the Bathroom

Are you an avid cleaner or does your bathroom look like the battlefield remains of World War II? Either way, the season brings upon us the adult responsibility of making sure our bathroom is clean and tidy for a new day ahead. Hear me loud and clear, you should not wait a whole season to clean your bathroom, but if a season change is what it takes to serve as a friendly reminder, so be it. Maintaining a clean bathroom (or entire household), decreases the chances of any fungal and bacterial infections that can be passed onto you. Each full day ends with a return home from various levels of exposure to dirt and grime. Keeping a clean bathroom not only cuts back on germs, but it also gives off positive vibes, a great way to start and end your day. Don’t believe me? Recall how you feel whenever you check into a nice hotel room. Doesn’t the perfectly made bed and spotless bathroom relieve a little tension and leave you feeling a little lighter? Pull out the cleaning products, jam out to your favorite playlist, and get to the scrubbing.

Pumping Iron

No one is calling for you to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger but it’s that time to get fit. It’s never too late to get your body in check and reevaluate your eating habits. We know that a workout routine lends to full release of toxins, thus promoting radiant, smooth skin. Before you begin applying facial cleansers or layers of cream, give your body a solid foundation to start from. Fight off that acne or skin irritation with a core workout that can increase blood flow and allow the cells in your body to work properly and release any internal waste. Start small and gradually build up to a strong workout regime that can drive maximum results for a healthy start into the season.

Rapper Ace Hood drops photographical motivation on his IG to get you thru your workouts.

Get started incorporating these habits and you’ll not only have a great fall, but a little more balance overall.

Groom Guy Invades “Everybody” US Tour w/ Logic + Joey Bada$$

So its not everyday you get the call to attend a tour show like Logic and Joey Bada$$’ EVERYBODY tour. It was nothing pure magic & musical nostalgia watching these two performers pure their lyrical ether to a bucket load of fans at a sold out show. Once that call hit my phone & request to bring my tools, I knew it was time. So I finished my morning at the salon and raced down to the MGM Resort in Maryland. Greeted warmly by tour management, I slid some time to reconnect with some ol’ industry buddies. While Logic & Joey had center stage that night, so did I as I was able to provide cuts to the tour team. From the DJs, instrumentalist, to members of group Pro Era, Groom Guy services were in full effect baby! The conversations were fueled with honesty, authenticity, and an fire exchange of opinions filled with laughter, some vulnerability and communal building.

The night was closed out with pure gratified for the tour team for the service and catching with my guy Joey Bada$$. Tour life can definitely be a point of tension for following a grooming formula. Luckily, Groom Guy was able to drop some quick gems to make sure there’s a healthy balance of general upkeep thats not too tough to maintain. Thank ya’ll for a classic night. Until next time….

Hands Dirty, Nose Clean: Grooming Tips We Learned From Hit Show “Power”

It seems like only yesterday we saw Omari Hardwick’s Jamie be on on top of the world playing the high-profile entrepreneur / gangster who sounded like he had everything under control. If you’ve missed out on the highest rated show in Starz channel history, you may want to grab that channel. Jamie continues on his tumultuous journey of fatherhood, moving past infidelity, and constant avoidance of police interference and those within his own drug-run empire. There’s never a dull moment for Jamie but somehow he is able to to maintain his dashing style and supremeness (yes, thats a word).

Somebody tell James Bond to step aside & take notes. We were able to compile some helpful tips from Omari Hardwick’s character and learn a thing or two about getting your hands dirty but keeping your nose clean.

1. Frequent tailor visits

A basic suit can read “stylish effort” but a well tailored one signifies “sophistication.” It’s no surprise Jamie was a successful nightclub owner on the series and had to show for it. Whether he was conducting a deal, legally or illegally, the man made sure his suit game was proper and his colors coordinated. From a simple three piece suit to modeling an outfit with just a vest, we learned that its important to have access to counsel on the best styles that suit you and your personal preference. Let a tailor or someone you trust take over in order to really sport that suit and address any additional mishaps.

2. Show & Tell (the beard)

Throughout the series, Jamie keeps his facial hair growth to a minimum. Opposed to growing a full beard, the character lets his light shine on his other strong facial features and the goatee stands alone on its on constantly shaped. From a barber’s perspective, there’s a guess that a razor is including on his goatee touch ups because those that shape is super crispy. If you’re one to grow facial hair, take a look in the mirror or consult your barber on the best style to grow it. From a full beard, goatee, or simple mustaches, there’s a selection to choose from that can fitting smoothly with your heard shape.

3. Hitting the gym

Club owner by day and ruthless drug kingpin by night. We see there’s a never dull moment in Jamie’s life but somehow makes time to hit the gym. Power’s Omari Hardwick may rule his household with an iron fist but it seems as though he’s also built like it too. I guess all those hours in the gym pay and led to a character who looks like he exfoliates regularly. Sweating at the gym is a release of bodily toxins and results in fresh, vibrant skin tone like Mr. Jamie St. Patrick. His physicality, either on or off the show, remains as an model of the summer bod we’re still looking achieve. R.I.P. Hagen Danz ice cream!

4. Crown Royal

With a dark caesar and slight waves, Jamie’s  haircut is minimal yet majestic. He keeps his crown well maintained without a single spot of frizz or loose hair propping up. He must be using that Frederick Benjamin sleek water pomade. Either way, its a reminder that an outfit isn’t complete if the hair isn’t in place so keep your tools handy as it relates to this current summer heatwave.

Groom Guy Tip: It’s not only one to look like a boss but smell like one with 50 Cent’s Power cologne. Evocative of a lush forest on a cool, crisp morning, this scent attracts the attention of everyone who walks in your path and keeps you fresh and confident all day long.

“Pharrelleva Young” – 3 Critical Grooming Lessons We Learned From Pharrell Williams

It’s no surprise one of the most versatile artists of our generation is Pharrell Williams. From celebrated producer, film composer, philanthropist just to name a few, it continues to amaze us to see his inability to age…at least show it. Over the years, you’ll fail to point any type of wrinkle or grey hair on his head? How? Why?

We were able to finally compile three solid reasons why after a couple research interviews.

  1. Readily hydrated
  2. Exfoliation
  3. Red meat reduction

Hydration

He explains in a couple archived interviews that a lot of his daily intake is good ol’ H2O. “You know, I guess, its lots of water” says Pharrell. We can hardly imagine anything less then water would suffice considering this man probably travels to Dubai and London while on a “lunch break.” We can also assume that from the late studio nights to early music compositions with Hans Zimmer, he’s not touching any Deer Park or Poland Spring bottles. An creative of his stature likes to load up on Core Water.

Exfoliation

It’s probably one of the most overused words you hear your girlfriend saying but its about time you understand it. The term “exfoliate” simply means the act of removing, in this case, dead skin cells. So we’re sure in between his private studio sessions & hosting gigs, Pharrell adds this routine to his schedule. Keep the skin refreshed & clean with a weekly regimen of exfoliation 2-3 times a week.

Red Meat Reduction

Although there is no proven facts surfacing that red meat indeed affects ones overall health including skin & aging, Pharrell remind us to enjoy in moderation. He’s not only a proud Southerner (Virginia native) but he also shares that he treats his stomach to classic BBQ….and so can you. I can add that you do lower your chances of any type of reaction to red meat when slimming your intake. Producers of red meat, like your local super market, does have a reputation for having extremely questionable methods of chemically-enhanced farming. The less chemicals the better!

Thank You Mr. President: 4 Lifetime Grooming Tips We’ll Never Forget

If you’re like us, then you were shocked to know that President Obama’s reign of supremacy is sadly coming to a close. He spoke last night at his Farewell Address to the America people in a tone of tranquility and victory. He deserves the various accolades for his continued strides & passionate efforts on looking out for the overall, common good of the American people….which now seems highly questionable with our newly President-elect (no, I won’t bother saying his name).

In the midst of maintaining his duties as commander-in-chief, we couldn’t help but notice some outstanding grooming tips from President Obama. We have to recognized his staying power to age gracefully and pick up some really helpful tips on how to look like a worldwide “Boss” and certainly look the part. Here’s what we’ve scooped over the last eight years from the President Obama:

  1. Embracing the grey

We can imagine being the leader of the free world is no easy task and can bring loads of stress. But if I’m under any stress like this, I’m definitely trying to age like this guy. We can never truly escape wrinkles, unless you’re Pharrell Williams, and President Obama has proven that the wrinkles & grey on his hair can makes it way in smoothly. There’s no JustForMen touching that scalp. The Prez has learned to fully embrace his grey’s and they’ve returned to him with a graceful presence that signifies prestige, wisdom, and a wealth of knowledge & experience. So don’t be that guy fighting the “day of the grey”.

2. “The Obama Cut”

The President may be one of the most powerful man in the world but he still needs his haircut too. We can’t assume that it magically looks like that during his White House Press speeches. There is a man hired to make sure he looks sharp named Zariff. The native Chicago barber has climbed to fame during President Obama’s term due to his ability to quietly keep the Prez polish’d and neat with his frequent barber trips. According to his interview with Essence:

The Obama cut is a custom cut. It came about in 2004 when Mr. Obama came into the shop and said he was speaking at the Democratic National Convention that evening. So I had to make him look sharp. Before that he was wearing his hair longer and a little curlier. I took it down to a short cut, tapered on the sides, back and neck. I wanted it to look more natural. – Zariff (President Obama’s Barber)

3. Radiant Skin

Whether its First Lady Michelle making sure he doesn’t leave the house looking a hot, dry mess or someone in his cabinet, the Prez continues to shine in front of the camera. We can barely spot any type of pimple or skin blemish. We’re guessing someone must have put him onto the newest Scotch Porter’s face charcoal wash or Mallin & Goetz. Either way, there’s no vaseline hitting his face & the daily skincare shows. Now its your turn…

4. Pearly Whites

I’ve ran across my fair share of C-Span correspondents and televised politicians who love showing their grillz and I’m not talking their 14K gold. Unfortunately, these “gold fronts” weren’t the ones you bought from your local dealer but from their leftover dinners they refused to brush out properly. Nothing could be worse then smiling for millions of American people with unkept teeth. President Obama is was one of the happiest presidents I’ve seen photographed. I would too if my teeth graced to cover of t-shirts, posters, and TV screens across the globe. I’m sure his dental plan isn’t cheap but well worth it. He continues to model those shiners (100% real too) with pride. It should make us want to spend an extra two minutes brushing in morning (and at night).

At-Home Facial Skincare

By: Kadia Blagrove

Smooth, clean, even-toned skin can be achieved in 6 easy steps. Find your new daily routine below!

Step 1: Open your pores

Open your pores for a deeper clean. This can be done in a hot shower, a hot washcloth or towel, or by steaming your face over a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head to trap the heat.

Step 2: Wash your face

Wet your face with warm water. Smooth a dime-sized squeeze of your facial cleanser between your palms and lather all over your face avoiding your eyes and lips.

Product recommendations: Garnier Shine Control Cleansing Gel, Cetaphil, Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser

Step 3: Exfoliate

Scrub away dead skin and debri with a exfoliator towel, cleansing brush, or a gentle facial scrub.  Rinse with cold water.

Product recommendations: Prospector Co. Gleaner’s Facial Scrub

*OR go d.i.y. style and make your own: coconut oil + sugar mix,  honey + olive oil + sea salt mix

Step 4: Clean dry

You should always have a face towel, used only for, you guessed it, your face. It’s a great way to keep your face clean.  Pat dry your face.

Step 5: Toner

Close your pores with a toner. Dab a few drops of toner on a cotton ball and wipe all over face in one single swipe.

Product recommendations: Apple cider vinegar (can dilute with water if it’s too harsh for your skin), Witch Hazel, Origins United State Balancing Tonic

Step 6: Moisturize

Hydrate your skin with a non-greasy moisturizer. Apply a dime size amount of your moisturizer of choice and smooth all over that handsome, clean face of yours.

Product recommendations: Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion, Cetaphil, cocoa butter + coconut oil.
